Heuer Bundeswehr Serial Numbers
Feb 13, 2012 Actual photography was taken to show letter 'T' above number 6 on the dial (Heuer Bund variant identifier), nothing more and nothing less. Anyway, sorry for the photo quality, if this is something that bothers you, or anyone else in this topic. I've been looking for a Heuer Bund watch to purchase. And my oh my what a mine field they seem to be. There seems to be so many variations out there. I'm trying to find one that is as original as can be which is very difficult. I'm close to pulling the trigger on this one. Can anyone provide their expertise? My main concern is the 1550SG between the lugs looks a little funky to me.
Also the bevel space between the lugs and bezel isn't as pronounced as on other examples, but I've seen others similar to this. The Bundeswehr (name of the German Army, also called 'Bund' in short) watches were ordered by the German Army from Leonidas/Heuer during the early 1960ies onwards, given to their pilots and the officers in submarines.
The are equipped with the robust Valjoux caliber 230, fourfold bolted housing and fly-back function. Until the beginning of the 1980ies, this watch never had another name than ‘Bundeswehr’ and always had a 13 digit number on the back, which made it possible to attribute it to the owner and year of make. Later on, these watches were replaced by more modern types and the long-serving ‘Bundeswehr’ watches came to the second-hand and vintage markets.
They were not much sought after in the beginning, until collectors discovered the esthetically outstanding design, which is not in conflict with the mundane requirements of the military (besides the outstanding technical qualities). It has clear structures, good readability, also in the dark, and functional features like the fly-back function, allowing several stopping-sequences after another, without setting back the seconds-hand to zero. The ‘Bundeswehr’ has undergone a lot of technical and optical changes during the time of use in the army, which makes it difficult today to identify these watches. The Heuer logo can be smaller or larger, there are watches with or without the marking H3 (referring to the luminous material on the hands and numerals), the fonts of the numbers vary and so on and so on (many more things could be listed here). In the beginning, it had the brand name ‘Leonidas’ on the dial and, after the takeover of this company by Heuer, the logo was subsequently changed. In the 90ies, SINN (in Frankfurt/Germany) did some overhauling and re-engineering of these watches, which were then given the SINN logo. Quite a confusion around these watches and with prices going up, they are coming straight from ‘dreamland’ for fakers and re-dialers (although the specific movement makes it difficult to come up with fakes internally, the dials,hands etc.
