When you subdivide the rectangle, Artisan will subdivide it with 'soft' edges. If you have 'view hidden geometry' turned off, you will not see these edges so make sure it is turned on.

The reason SketchUp locked up is because you were actually subdividing thousands of triangles but did not realize it because hidden geometry was turned off. I will possibly changes this in a future update so that 'view hidden geometry' will be turned on automatically every time the 'subdivide' button is pressed.
